After discussion with various staff, parents, and other youth ministers, the Youth ministries team has decided to reimagine this  summer’s service-learning trips, originally planned to be in Fort Worth and Oklahoma City. Our partner organization Connect Fort Worth will not be accepting mission teams in June, and at this time we don’t know the risk of moving forward with out-of-state travel due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation.

While this is a loss, it is also an opportunity. Instead of out-of-state service-learning trips, Youth Ministries is planning a  service-learning week here in Kansas City  for both middle and high schoolers from  July 19-24. This week will offer a chance to serve with mission partners like Micah Ministry and Cross-Lines and to learn about their work, especially in response to the crisis of this year’s pandemic. Projects that benefit individuals and ministries within our church family, like making gifts for or visiting homebound members, will be included.

Stay tuned for more information about the framework and details for this service-learning week, which will depend on regulations and comfort level for families. If possible, we will aim for a full “staycation” experience, inviting youth to stay at the church overnight and spend all day together, with a similar agenda to our out-of-town trips. At the least we will have organized service and learning projects in the city every day that respect social distance if in-person, or projects that can be done remotely. This experience is open to all current 6th through 12th graders, and friends.
