When we interviewed columnist/commentator/author David Brooks a couple of years ago we asked him what spiritual practices he engages in to nurture his personal faith. “Reading” he quickly replied, “reading spiritual books” And something washed over me like a healing balm. Reading is not just for learning but can be a form of prayer, a spiritual practice. This summer I look forward to reading fiction, theology, scripture, poetry and spiritual books! What’s on your reading list?

If you are like me, you may have trouble carving out time to read a book or listen to a podcast. But what if it was part of your spiritual nurture, a practice for nurturing the soul and listening for God? I love fiction because it helps me see the world from a new angle, evokes compassion and awakens the spirit. But I also read a lot of non-fiction and while on the run I find that podcasts can stimulate the spiritual sensibilities and set the tone for the day. Grace and Peace,
