After many purchases ranging from toilet paper to saris, we enjoyed a great dinner at a local vegetarian restaurant.
School is a 6-day-a-week thing for students at the Rambo School, so Saturday morning found us at morning assembly, after which Susan Garner taught Yoga to 7th graders. A few of us tried, not very successfully, our hand at cricket. Dr. Henry took us to Baitalpur, where we saw the UCC church, currently being reconstructed, that his father attended as a boy. Baitalpur is also the location of a former mission leprosy hospital.
Sunday morning, first year nursing students welcomed us into their rooms for an informal visit. Later, garbed in our new Indian attire, we all boarded buses to a picnic. Our hosts had arrived very early and cooked huge pots of curried mutton, saffron rice, veg and sweet rice balls. A few hardy souls swam in the lake, while others enjoyed walking in the gardens. After a side trip to see two Hindu temples, we headed home–exhausted, but happy.
Susan continues teaching yoga to the Rambo School students and the nursing students. She is becoming quite adept at communicating with students with limited English. Many exclamations of “Good yoga, ma’am” are heard after each class. We observed many surgeries. Dinner Monday was at the Henrys again as we welcomed nursing students from San Diego and guests from Mumbai, Indonesia and Scotland.
Today we had the honor of presenting a baby box to a new mother. More about the baby boxes later. Most of our group headed to Kanha National Park this afternoon, where they hope to see a tiger tomorrow morning.
