The sun was not shining, but the excitement in the air and the smiles on faces definitely brightened the “Next 100 Groundbreaking” that was held on Sunday, March 26, 2023. Over 150 people of all ages gathered on the east side of the church where the most visible renovations will be taking place. Jennifer Austenfeld, Congregational Board Chair, welcomed everyone and celebrated that this time has finally come. She introduced Peter Holt, Co-Chair of the Centennial Steering Committee. He recognized other members of the Steering Committee and thanked all contributors and members who have been generous with prayers and gifts through this journey. He also introduced the Building Committee Members and recognized the Centennial Gifts Campaign Leaders.

Rev. Carla Aday, Senior Minister, followed with a joyful praise “This is the day that God has made.” and invited Stella Guthrey forward to read I Corinthians 3: 9-11. Rev. Aday reminded the group of the quote made on August 1, 1921 by Dr. George Hamilton Combs at the first groundbreaking of this site. He announced to a group of children standing near him, “Children, this church is for you. YOU throw out the first shovelful”. Rev. Aday continued, “Today we bridge the first 100 years

with the next 100 years – so today, grandparents and grandchildren of the church will throw out the first shovelful together – sharing in God’s legacy of faith and love here at Country Club Christian Church”. Following a prayer, the tower bells began to chime and eight pairs of grandparents and grandchildren placed their shovels in the ground together. Applause and laughter followed along with an overwhelming feeling of hope and joy.
