At its General Assembly in July, 2017, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) elected the Rev. Dr. Teresa Hord Owens as its new General Minister and President. Dr. Owens is the first African-American woman to lead a major American denomination. She succeeds Dr. Sharon Watkins, who has led the denomination since 2005.
