Community.

That word means many different things to many different people. But for 70 of us here at Country Club Christian Church, “community” meant being a group in the Rocky Mountains.

For 49 years, folks from Country Club Christian Church have retreated to the mountains, to spend a week hiking, journeying, and fellowshipping together in community. This year, for our evening vespers, we went through the entirety of the book of Ruth, discovering that which we should cling to during hard times.

That’s the 50,000 foot view of the week. But descend upon the community itself, you discover much more. You discover people pitching in, to help our wonderful cooks get ready for meals each day. You see invitation, with families interacting with one another in group hikes, crafts, and activities. You see fun, including a rousing rendition of “Barbie Girl,” sung from a horse wagon throughout the YMCA Camp.

It was a great week that will personally stick with me for two reasons, One will be the way so many of our older kids opened their arms to the younger kids, including my son, to make them feel welcomed, and playing together just about every single waking moment. Secondly, I will always remember the way this community rallied around one another, showing love in the midst of accidents, frustrations, and the general rhythm of what it means to do life together.

It felt like church. It was church.

It was community.
