The first meeting for the organization of a Christian Church and Bible School in the Country Club district of Kansas City, Missouri, was held in the Community Hall at Brookside in October of 1920. Initiated by city missionaries, Frank and Mary Bowen, attendance grew rapidly and soon the new congregation searched for a minister to lead them. Dr. George Hamilton Combs, recently retired as minister at Independence Boulevard Christian Church, became the first minister at Country Club Christian Church.

With an ever-growing congregation, members began to look for land on which to build their church. J.C. The land selected at 61st and Ward Parkway was purchased on April 18, 1921. It had formerly been used as a military camp as well as a cornfield.

A contract for the first building unit, now the education section of the building, was signed July 25, 1921. The building was ready for use on May 7, 1922. Still larger space was needed. On June 17, 1923, a contract was signed and the present sanctuary building was dedicated on January 24, 1926. At that time, it represented an investment of $525,000

Building architects were Roots and Siemans. The cathedral-like stone towers grace the church, which is of English Gothic architecture. They are still a distinguishing landmark in the community.

Church members purchased the stained glass windows, the organ, and a full set of chimes as memorials to beloved church members. The stained glass windows were designed by Charles K. Connick, one of America’s great artists.

Dr. Combs retired in January, 1942. His aggressive leadership was fired by enthusiasm and marked by vision. With the arrival of Dr. Warren Grafton as minister, other positions were established: Minister of Christian Education, Minister of Music and a financial manager.

Dr. Lawrence Bash was installed as Senior Minister in January, 1960. The George Hamilton Combs Chapel, which was dedicated in 1962, became a major part of the building complex. Additions to the staff were a Minister of Pastoral Care and a Parish Visitor.

In 1978, Dr. Bash retired and Dr. Eugene Brice became Senior Minister. In 1988, the church’s first female minister, Rev. Carla Aday, was appointed Minister of Singles. (Rev. Aday is still on staff today as Senior Associate Minister.) A building renovation also occurred during this time. Dr. R. Robert Cueni was Senior Minister from 1991-2002.

Dr. R. Glen Miles was Senior Minister of Country Club Christian Church from January 2003-February 2017.

Rev. Carla Aday was called as the church’s first female Senior Minister in April of 2017.
