Romans 4: 13-15

One of my favorite quotes reads: “It doesn’t make much difference how the paint is put on as long as something has been said.” – Jackson Pollock

Any artist can create a work of art based on a formula or set of rules. Good visual art, for example, should involve a little math, a little color theory and follow a few rules of scale and proportion. Great art, on the other hand, is created when the artist pours every ounce of his or herself into the work, when their love of and commitment to their craft is visible in every brush stroke, regardless of what rules they may or may not have adhered to.

It didn’t occur to me until today that Pollock and Paul have a lot in common. Paul stresses in today’s passage that our goal shouldn’t be to live a life based on rules. It’s about living a life where one’s passion and commitment are visible in every action. It’s about the freedom that comes from living a life committed to God beyond the rules.  It’s about living a life of faith, not formula.

Creative, Loving God, during this season of Lent, may we find the strength and courage to live a life, a chock-full-of-passion life, focused on love, commitment and grace so that our faith in you might be evident in every brushstroke of our lives.  Amen.
