My mom drove us home in the snow. My infant son was buckled into his car seat. I sat in the passenger seat looking out the front windshield and it was like entering the world for the first time. Everything looked different now that I was responsible for raising this precious life whom I now loved in a way I didn’t know was humanly possible. Having a child completely turns the world upside down. It is the beginning of a wild ride, crammed with joys that make your heart burst with joy and sorrows that rip your heart in two.

Where does one go in the midst of parenthood to find a silent moment to think? Where does a child turn for that spiritual guidance we promised her when she was dedicated as an infant in our sanctuary? These questions have been pondered by a team of church leaders and staff over the past year. The result is “9:01 Sacred Space/Modern Message” which will launch on August 19 at, you guessed it 9:01.

While I hope we can effectively respond to the changing reality for families, I also pray that folks of all ages will find 9:01 to be a doorway to experience the Spirit of God afresh. No longer own a tie? Come casual! Pressed for time? Come a few minutes late. Love music? Come hear the upright bass and soprano sax along with the piano.

More details are available here. I’m asking you to do three things.

1) Please pray for this new service, that it will offer God’s spirit of love and grace to families with young children;
2) Invite a family or a friend that you know to give it a try and
3) Continue to bring your voice to church on Sunday at 9, 10 or 11 and offer your welcoming smile to God’s children who range in age from 1 to 101!I am exceedingly grateful for the ways you as a 98 year old church, continue to open yourselves to God’s Spirit and make room for more of God’s children at the table of grace.

With hope,
Carla
